Job Description

As a pharmacy technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that patients receive the right medications to help them manage their health conditions. The main responsibility will be to encode medications accurately and efficiently in accordance with established departmental protocols. You will work closely with the team leader, pharmacy technician, and licensed pharmacist to ensure that patients receive the highest quality care. As a vital part of the healthcare team, you will be expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, accuracy, and safety at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties assigned by a licensed pharmacist. Areas of work are checked routinely for maintenance of quality control. Work is conducted by generally accepted standards of practice following departmental procedures and policies outlined in the department operations manual.
  • Reads and interprets physicians’ orders received in the pharmacy and transcribes same into the pharmacy computer medication profile. Requires knowledge to adjust dosing times as the pharmacy will generate MARs, prepares unit doses, and label individual patient envelopes for dispensing to the nursing unit. A licensed pharmacist verifies work.
  • Coordinates narcotic delivery to each nursing unit; ensures that records are kept accurate. Make sure pharmacists are aware of any returns so they are processed accordingly.
  • Prepares in accordance with pharmacy law and standard of pharmacy practice outpatient RXs (prescription) to be dispensed after pharmacist approval.
  • Attends and participates in pharmacy technician meetings to exchange ideas to achieve the department’s goals. Keeps procedures up-to-date in the pharmacy technician manual to train new personnel and quickly reference specific jobs so they are performed according to the department’s policies.
  • Assists with pharmacy billing by using appropriate computer functions, reason codes, and dates for charging and crediting.
  • Continues to educate by attending drug-in-services and keeping up with policy changes.
  • Maintains competency in caring for patients for all age groups and developmental and maintains competency explicitly indicated by orientation guidelines for a particular unit.
  • Understand the importance of resources for staying current with changes in practice.
  • Understand prescription and nonprescription medications’ use and side effects to treat joint disease states.
  • Assist the Pharmacist in assuring the quality of pharmaceutical services.
